A cage does not open simply because a law has passed. South Korea’s move to end its dog meat industry is a historic victory—but the dogs still caught in the transition need that promise to become a safe place to live.

The legislation passed in 2024 makes breeding, slaughter and sales for human consumption illegal from 2027. Humane World for Animals says its work during the phase-out includes rescue and advocacy for the dogs who remain on farms. Its scope is the dog meat industry; the legislation is not a combined ban on dog and cat meat.

For Animals First Aid, this milestone raises a practical question: what happens after an animal leaves suffering behind? A frightened dog may need patient care long after the headlines move on. Shelter, treatment and a suitable home are how a legal victory becomes a life changed.

That commitment also runs through AFA’s partnership with Paws of Smederevo, supporting rescued dogs in Serbia. Explore their care through AFA and stand beside the people who keep showing up for animals whose recovery cannot be rushed.

Celebrate progress. Choose responsible adoption. And help make the days after rescue count—because safety should be the start of an animal’s new life, not the end of our concern.
