 Just a short drive away, Paws of Smederevo (Šape Smedereva) is fighting the same fight on the roadside, in traffic, in danger. Talia — one of their rescues — was found injured on the edge of a busy Serbian highway, terrified and broken. Volunteers risked their own safety, literally stepping into speeding lanes to get her. One of them was hurt during the rescue. Her legs were shattered, and she needed complex surgery on both broken paws. She is healing now. She is alive now. That happened because donors helped cover impossible vet bills.

Even while paying for Talia’s surgeries, the team was called to yet another injured dog. They did not say “we can’t, we’re broke.” They went anyway. They always go anyway. But that means vet debt, food debt, and constant fear of the next emergency. As winter hits Serbia, cold becomes as deadly as hunger. Supporters keep those doors open. Supporters buy that next bag of food. Supporters turn “maybe she’ll make it” into “she’s safe now.”
