There are moments in this work that never leave your mind…

This is one of them.

For years, together with our partners in Serbia, you have stood beside two extraordinary women - Vera and Jelena - helping feed their animals, treat the sick, and keep hope alive.

But today, the situation is slipping beyond what they can manage alone.

Vera’s message is heartbreaking…

Food has run out. What dregs remain are being stretched with ground corn just to keep the dogs and cats from starving to death. She says she cries while feeding them - they voraciously gobble what little she gives them, but they are still on the brink of starvation.

At the same time, a wave of fleas and ticks is spreading fast. The cats are suffering most - their bodies covered, their skin inflamed, many are wounded. Last year, nearly every animal developed painful sores. Without urgent treatment, it will happen again.

And then there is the part that never leaves you…

In winter, which is just ending in Serbia, when temperatures drop, Vera sleeps with the dogs just to keep them warm. For you or me, sharing a bed with a beloved pet is a comfort… a choice. But imagine lying on a cold floor, wrapped around a couple dozen shivering rescues, using your own body just to keep them from freezing through the night. No one should have to do that!

Jelena is fighting the same battle - holding together a sanctuary for the forgotten, the injured, the ones no one else would take. Both women rely on Animals First Aid not just for support, but for survival.

Recognizing the intense urgency of the situations, earlier this year, Animals First Aid made a commitment to raise a $10,800 building fund (approximately €10,000 or £8,600 GBP) to a create safe, permanent shelter. Not survival from week to week. Real protection from cold, disease, and suffering. So far, we have raised just over a third. It is not enough. We must continue.

But right now, $345 (€300 or £260) is URGENTLY needed for food, and $460 (€400 or £350) is required immediately for parasite treatment for 35 dogs and 26 cats.

These are critical needs - but they are only part of the bigger promise we made.

If we stop now, nothing changes. But if we finish this - if we push through -we can change everything. We can give these animals warmth. Safety. Stability. We can make sure next winter is different. We can stand by the people who have never abandoned them.

Animals First Aid is committed. But we cannot do this without you.
