Animals First Aid is once again standing beside one of our most dedicated partners in Serbia - Paws of Smederevo, a small but courageous rescue effort working in a city where abandoned dogs face unimaginable hardship.

In Smederevo, a place meant for remembrance has become something else entirely.

The local cemetery has become a dumping ground for unwanted dogs.

So have junkyards and dark alleys.

Volunteers walk among graves and junkyards searching for frightened animals left behind - puppies born in freezing cold, mothers struggling to keep their babies alive, sick dogs hiding between rusted metal and broken concrete. Many are not found in time.

Recently, volunteers discovered a frightened young mother hiding among the graves with her puppies. With patience and care, the team managed to rescue them. Miraculously, the puppies survived and were adopted into loving homes. Their mother - now named Coco - is safe in foster care and still waiting for her own chance at happiness.

But not every story ends this way…

Two tiny puppies, Aska and Lia, were recently rescued from an illegal junkyard where parasites and disease spread rapidly. Soon after their rescue, both puppies became dangerously ill with tick fever. Despite immediate treatment, little Lia did not survive. Her sister Aska is still fighting for her life.

Losses like this break the hearts of the volunteers - but they continue their mission because they know other dogs are still out there, waiting to be found.

Every day they search cemeteries, junkyards, and forgotten corners of their city. They feed street dogs. They rescue the sick and injured. They rush animals to veterinary care. And whenever possible, they help them find loving homes.

But they are overwhelmed.

Food, medicine, veterinary care, and shelter costs continue to rise while more dogs are abandoned every year. This is why Animals First Aid is stepping in again to help.
